Well, after unboxing the starter, I'm pleased to see Dial based pin Markers (even if they need painting to be able to read easily) Some pretty cool templates, and dome really decent updates to the ?Bolt-action game mechanic. Although in some places it seems overly complex lots of special rules and things for stuff in the game that is remarkably similar... perhaps this is to allow room to expand, but right now it feels a tad clunky, plus the 'scifi names' for normal stuff is a tad irritating, a grenade launcher isn't called a grenade launcher, etc.... so you have to learn all their fancy names to understand their weaponry, but that's just aesthetics.
One of the biggest problems I saw was that the two armies included in the boxed set are not even CLOSE to a fair fight... the "Ghar" a primitive warlike race with very heavy armour, multishot guns, but few models and a few disadvantages, vs the Concord (basically humans with cool gear, special light armour, plasma weapons, and cool drones/uavs that follow them around and give bonuses or even fight) There are only enough models on the Ghar side to field their two most basic troops, one 'shooty' squad and one 'fighty' squad, basically you have enough to make a 500 point 'skirmish' force orginization. you have enough concord to make more than that, but sticking to the 500 points and the force org chart for a 'skirmish'. The Concord just absolutely hand the Ghar their asses. I've run three 'practice scenarios' against myself some with terrain some without, and all three times the concord completely obliterated the ghar, twice while suffering ZERO casualties and the third time while only losing 2 out of 15 basic troopers)... someone didn't test this at all... the concord forces vastly outmatch the ghar that you start with. perhaps this will change in larger games, but so far, I really wanted to like the ghar, but they just can't stand up to the concord at all.
I'd like to see how the other 3 starter races fare, but so far, I'm unimpressed... I am pleased with some of the rules updates though, and I hope to see them bring these over to Bolt-Action.
