This strike team is included in the Main starter box, it includes Anakin Skywalker as a Primary, Captain Rex as a secondary, and the 501st Clone Troopers as a Support
Anakin adds 4 four force points to your pool, which is 1 higher than most primary characters, but he only provides 7 Squad Points, meaning one of the other units coming with him must be a 3 pointer.
Taking Anakin as your primary, you actually have ALOT of options to substitute out other units, because NONE of his abilities provide or depend on any synergies. He's essentially a lone unit, and his main trick is that he is exceptionally deadly in melee combat, being the only character in the game so far that can make two full combat actions in a single activation (he does have to spend at least 2 force to activate that ability though), and his combat tree dishes out very large amounts of damage early in the tree. Also when opponents to shoot at him, there's a strong chance that they will take a little bit of damage during their own attack due to his deflect ability.
This Primary character could be included as a combat hammer with literally any other units from other boxes. if you want to mix and match. but for the sake of the analysis, let's take a look at the units that are suggested to go with him:
Captain Rex: 4 point Secondary unit.
this is an absolutely exceptional secondary character, providing a mix of very useful synergy bonuses, however, they must be with Galactic Republic units, and Clone Trooper units. Anakin can benefit from the free move provided by activating Rex, as he does have Galactic Republic. But having Rex within range 3 of Clone Trooper units makes him really shine, as he can provide a little bit of healing (or more importantly remove conditions) and can generate additional out of turn attacks and movement. Not only that, he himself is highly maneuverable and very likely to have steadfast so it's harder to knock him off objectives. (although this will not work against melee attacks unless Obi Wan is also in the force, but more on Obi in a different analysis)
501st Clone Troopers: 3 point Supporting Unit
Although these are a "weak" unit costing only 3 squad points, with the synergies provided by Rex, they can be very effective. They are quite mobile, and while hunkered also have steadfast, making them ideal for holding objectives. Although their own attack is not very imporessive because it is unlikely to do high amounts of damage, their very long range coordinated fire ability adds to the damage of all attack actions made by other Galatic Republic units. (which again, includes Anakin)
This is a very effective strike team, The clone troopers move to capture and/or objectives while being supported by Rex, and Anakin is free to zip off to enemy objectives and do some butt-whooping. This strike team is IDEAL to pair with Obi Wan's "Hello There" Squad pack due to the additional clone synergies, and Obi Wan's ability to allow firendly units to keep Hunker in melee (meaning Steadfast works in melee too)
However, due Anakin not PROVIDING any synergies (although able to benefit from them), he can lead other forces. It would have been interesting to see him with the Mandalorians, however, he can't lead them becuase he only has 7 squad points, and both Bo Katan and or Gar Saxon are 4 point units along with both varieties of Mandalorian support units also being 4 point units, he would need 8. He could however, lead some droids, as Kraken is a 4 and both the B1's and the Magnaguard are 3 pointers, but he would not gain synergies. However, if you wanted to bring a 4 point clone trooper Support unit with Anakin, it is now possible since the 3 point Commander Ponds secondary has recently become available. The other possible swap out is the 501st support could be switched with the ARF clone troopers. There is very little difference in the two units though, the ARF getting SLIGHTLY more defence but only against ranged attacks, and their coordinated fire gives !-tokens instead of bleed tokens, both have their uses.
