This game has a simplified mechanic for choosing a force, which is actually refreshing for these types of games. Strategic pre-game planning is much more simple than other skirmish games, BUT that's actually a strength of the game, rather than a limitation because of the way it works.
You only choose 2 "Primary Characters" for your force. Each of those characters must bring a "Secondary" unit and a "Supporting" unit. MUST, not MAY. This means that your force will ALWAYS consist of exactly 6 units. 2 Primary, 2 Secondary, and 2 Support.
When you choose a Primary Character, it includes the main skills and abilities that you'll use to flavor your force. It includes a number of "Squad Points" that must be spent to purchase the Secondary and Supporting units. But also, it provides some Force points for your pool to use during the game.
Primary characters provide most of the flavor for a squad, they usually include active skills and abilities that are unique (We will discuss those in the more detailed unit analysis articles elsewhere on this forum)
Most of the time secondary characters provide some synergistic bonuses to the rest of your squad or even your force.
Support units usually provide firepower, and board control units that benefit from the skills/abilities on your primary and secondary units.
We will break down the squad boxes that are available for the game in upcoming posts, generally it is best to just choose two of them, and go with what is included to make your force, but there ARE some good mix and match alternatives possible.
